Irrational behavior is a part of human nature, but as MIT professor Dan Ariely has discovered in 20 years of researching behavioural economics, people tend to behave irrationally in a predictable fashion. Drawing on psychology and economics, he explains why patients get greater relief from a more expensive drug over its cheaper counterpart and why honest people may steal office supplies or communal food, but not money.

Money can’t buy happiness, and Tim Kasser has the evidence to prove it. Tim Kasser is Associate Professor of Psychology at Knox College (US), author of The High Price of Materialism and co-author of Psychology and Consumer Culture. In a recent lecture to the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce (UK), he promoted his explanation of how our contemporary culture of consumerism and materialism affects our everyday happiness and psychological health.

We all know that exercise and a little alcohol is good for the heart. What we don’t know is whether one of these two factors may compensate for the other, or whether both of them are equally important for our health. That is, can you skip the exercise and just do the drinking? Or, can you skip the drinking, and just do the exercise? Now, a longitudinal study shines some light on these perplexing dilemmas.

A good fight with your spouse may be good for your health. Husbands and wives who suppress their anger die earlier than couples whose partners express anger and resolve conflict, a recent study has found.

Norway’s boards now 40% female

From January 1 all public companies in Norway are obliged to ensure that at least forty percent of their board directors are women. If they don’t measure up, they could be dissolved. Most firms have obeyed the law, which was passed in 2003, but a few are yet to do so.
