An interesting game of Tag is doing the rounds of HR sites in which participants are asked to list five or more qualities we do not know about you that help you be a leader. After listing their qualities, the participant then nominates another victim. Some of the more interesting lists are:
Jim Holincheck - Gartner Research
- Have confidence in your own ability to lead
- Know your limitations and build teams to overcome them
- Communicate the bad and the good
- Understand before being understood
- Trust is critical
- It’s hokey, but I care
- I am flexible, and don’t sweat the small stuff
- But I’m rigid on the basics
- I share information
- I realise my limitations and focus on my strengths
- I’m still learning
- I’m accessible, and the door is always open
- I know that I don’t know it all.
- I make mistakes. Even my daughter’s princess wand won’t help
- I surround myself with those who do know
- I lead from my gut more than I care to admit
- I am committed to doing and being the best I can
- I can be trusted - to do what’s right, to say what needs to be said
- I am not in it for the glory
Well, here’s my take:
- Integrity
- Do unto others….
- Lead, don’t just manage
- Will they come when you want them to?
- Don’t push the river, it flows by itself
- If you aim at nothing, you will hit it
- Leave the drawbridge down
Try the game at your next dinner party. It may not be academic rigor, but you never know, it may be lead to some fresh research in the area of leadership.
