The hidden cost of bullying

Evidence that workplace bullying increases costs for organisations keeps mounting. Researchers at Florida State University surveyed more than 180 employees from a wide variety of professions, asking whether they had endured a history of abuse from their bosses, then asking a series of workplace performance questions. Employees working under an abusive supervisor tended to rebel quietly and indirectly by slacking off on the job and handing in sloppy work.

Rudeness and its consequences

Compelling evidence exists, not only anecdotally, but from serious scientific research, that rudeness affects how people perform on routine and creative tasks, as well as how likely they are to help others. In this study, three different forms of rudeness (rudeness instigated by a direct authority figure, rudeness delivered by a third-party offender, and imagining a situation in which a perpetrator was rude) converged to produce the same effects.

Do targets of workplace bullying portray a general victim personality profile? It is now evident that personality does plays an important role in the bullying process, but can we identify a personality profile that consistently characterises victims of bullying?

Bully survey: only 14% terminated

The Workplace Bullying Institute (US) has just released the results of their latest survey of workplace bullying. In August 2007, the Institute conducted online interviews with a representative sample of nearly 8000 adults. Some very interesting findings emerged.

The perspectives of those in power

The powerful are often accused of being predominantly concerned with their own desires and well-being, of being insensitive to the social implications of their behaviour, and of being poor perspective takers. Here is an interesting experiment that tends to confirm that fact.
