Getting even

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.” Like hell, I hear you say. How we long for revenge. Everyone knows a disgruntled person secretly wants to commit a destructive, maybe even violent, act to seek revenge. It’s just common wisdom. Or is it?

Payback time following lay-offs

Employees made redundant often fight back – either bad mouthing their former employer, or taking legal action if they feel their dismissal was unfair. According to Daniel Skarlicki at the University of British Columbia and colleagues, companies wishing to avoid this kind of retaliation need to provide as much information as possible to the staff they’re laying off, but more than that, they need to realise that this openness will only be effective if their staff perceive them to be of high integrity.

Does company fairness really matter?

Workers of all stripes, it is widely believed, assign a high priority to being treated fairly and respond positively to organisations that do so. Now new research suggests that in many instances this is not the case.
