Rudeness and its consequences

Compelling evidence exists, not only anecdotally, but from serious scientific research, that rudeness affects how people perform on routine and creative tasks, as well as how likely they are to help others. In this study, three different forms of rudeness (rudeness instigated by a direct authority figure, rudeness delivered by a third-party offender, and imagining a situation in which a perpetrator was rude) converged to produce the same effects.

Professor Robert Sutton's new book, The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn't, adds some fun and spice to the leadership debate. Although somewhat conservatively titled, his message hits a nerve with those of us who have suffered at the hands of the real thing.
