How does your latest management practice rate? Is it a brain wave or a brain fart? To see if it is especially praiseworthy or especially vile, take a look at the top ten from BusinessWeek’s list of worst and best management practices.

Of the Worst Management Practices, love contracts, anti-moonlighting, golden parachutes and Internet snooping practices all sour the way people feel about their jobs. In addition, poor treatment of job applicants also ranks high, indicating candidate relationship management practices are key elements of your brand image.

Of the Best Management Practices, recruiting and retention practices are major contributors to that which makes people feel good about their employers. From previous surveys, internal transfers (34%) and employee referrals (26%) consistently make up a large percentage of Sources of Hire, followed closely by the company website. The emphasis in the best list is clearly on the importance of Staff Motivation and Retention.

The two lists together demonstrate how important talent management strategies are to organisational success. And, in case you’re not quite sure which set of policies and programmes you’re working under, you may want to grab a copy of your company’s employee handbook and read it cover to cover. Better safe than sorry!
