Select the Best — Ability Tests
One part of successfully choosing the best candidate for a position is knowing what level of abilities the candidate will bring to the job. ASSESS is designed to accept seven different ability tests, a feature that is unique to our system. Depending upon the requirements of the position and the time available for testing, a candidate may be given any combination of these tests. All ability tests are administered in paper/pencil form then scored using score keys provided with the system.
NB. Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices – Short Version is available from Assess Systems Australia. All other tests, manuals and scoring templates are available from their respective publishers or Assess Systems Australia.
Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal
- Measures: The ability to analyse complex, multifaceted written information and to draw accurate conclusions. This capacity includes the ability to evaluate information and to recognise assumptions, facts, and situations where there is not enough information to arrive at a valid conclusion.
- Comments: A high level, formal measure of critical thinking ability and verbal skills. Probably the best intellectual ability test available for high level management and executive positions. Consider for Supervisor and Line managers, especially if successful performance depends heavily on decision making. (Use Form S of this test. No time limit; estimate 30 minutes to complete.)
Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices
- Measures: Measures flexibility of thinking and strength related to learning potential and conceptual thought. This capacity includes the ability to solve problems in new situations where one has little experience upon which to draw.
- Comments: A nonverbal test of pattern matching, and an effective measure of fluid/innate/general intelligence uninfluenced by education or environment. Best used in conjunction with another test such as the Watson-Glaser or the Thurstone to provide a picture of overall intellectual ability or aptitude. (No time limit; estimate 30 minutes to complete for shortened version.)
Thurstone Test of Mental Alertness
- Measures: Flexibility in one's thinking, intellectual quickness, and verbal and quantitative reasoning skills.
- Comments: The examinee must be able to quickly ‘switch gears’ back and forth between problem types. A good measure of the type of ‘on your feet’ abilities required in professional sales jobs. Recommended for professional, lower management, sales and administrative positions. (Timed; 20 minutes.)
RBH Arithmetic Reasoning Test
- Measures: The ability to solve word problems related to business math such as determining wage rates, discounts, percents, averages, etc.
- Comments: A measure of the candidate's ability to reason through quantitative problems. Recommended for middle to lower level positions. (Timed; 15 minutes.)
Employee Aptitude Survey – Verbal Comprehension (EAS1)
- Measures: The extent to which a person is familiar with words in the English language.
- Comments: A quick verbal fluency or vocabulary test. Recommended for middle to lower level positions requiring a good general vocabulary, e.g., supervisors, sales professionals, managers, and administrative assistants. (Timed; 5 minutes.)
Employee Aptitude Survey – Numerical Ability (EAS2)
- Measures: The ability to manipulate basic numbers (including percents and fractions) and to use simple arithmetic.
- Comments: A quick number skills test. Most appropriate for jobs with a high basic arithmetic content. (Timed; 10 minutes.)
Employee Aptitude Survey – Verbal Reasoning (EAS7)
- Measures: The ability to analyse verbal information and to deduce logical conclusions from that information.
- Comments: A quick verbal reasoning test. This test could be substituted for the Watson-Glaser if time is a critical factor in the testing process. (Timed; 5 minutes.)
