The Cost of a Bad Selection

Apart from the traditional costs of a bad selection, which include recruiting costs, training investments, and supervisory coaching time (generally estimated at about 2½ salary), a bad selection in a customer contact job will have a direct impact on customer retention. Customers who are ill treated leave for competitors.

Fred Reichheld, author of The Loyalty Effect: The Hidden Force Behind Growth, Profits and Lasting Value, estimates that the average company loses 50% of its customers in 5 years. Think of what just a small improvement in customer retention could mean to your bottom-line profits! (Reichheld suggests that a 5% improvement in retention would result in a 25% increase in profits for most organizations.)

If you include lost production, supervisor time, hiring and training costs, equipment failure, and poor service to customers, the cost of a bad selection can be minimally estimated by:

Hourly rate X 400

Even at $12.00 an hour, the cost of a bad hire is at least $4800!

In addition to using the SELECT work-personality surveys, the SELECT System also allows you to separately administer a basic abilities test battery. This battery can be created by combining up to 7 ability modules appropriate for the specific job.

  • Level 1 - A basic measure of reading skills and the ability to comprehend simple written instructions.

  • Arithmetic Level 2 - A basic measure of the arithmetic skills of multiplication and division using whole numbers and decimals.

Customising SELECT to Your Organisation

Name

Each ASSESS SELECT test has a standard name, i.e, SELECT for Customer Service. However, a client can create a custom name for their test at the time the survey is created in the account. For example, the Customer Service Survey can be renamed "ABC Company Customer Relations Survey."

Logos

Standard logos have been created for each test. The client may customise their testing site and report by adding their own logo.

Custom Job Tasks

The task willingness questions can be customised for each test. These questions help determine if the candidate is willing to perform required job tasks.

Custom Interviews

The SELECT report provides a structured, behavioural interview guide complete with individual, results-based additional probe questions. The content of this guide may be customised to include a company's existing interview or to tailor the interview process to the company.

Custom Test Development

Custom test development and validation is a major practice area for Assess Systems. Frequently, off-the-shelf tests are the best and most cost-effective solutions. However, for some jobs, new tests should be developed to best measure the characteristics and abilities needed. In addition to our standard offerings, we regularly develop and validate new tests and other selection processes for our client companies.

The SELECT 8.0 User Guides and Technical Manuals provide information for the general history of the SELECT System as well as detailed descriptions of specific SELECT surveys. This includes recent updates on pass-rates, how to read SELECT reports, how to use SELECT in your hiring decisions, validation information, and adverse impact analysis.

When you purchase SELECT, you receive an online link to your own SELECT administration site, complete with personal username and password. As the primary user, you can set up sub-users with varying access rights. There is no software to install. The system is entirely web-based.

All the ability and personality modules are included in your administration site. While you may only be interested in one or two particular jobs, you nevertheless receive access to all the validated industry tests. You simply select those that you want to use on your testing platform. Your designated users can access the testing platform with their own username and password to test candidates, anywhere, anytime.

You can also download any test and administer it as a paper and pencil test, and then upload candidate answers later from your administration site. You operate your site by purchasing blocks of units with each report consuming four to eight units each time it is generated. When all your units are consumed, you need to purchase more to generate further reports. Units are consumed when reports are generated, not when tests are administered. You manage your own candidates and generate your own reports.
